Stepping out the bounds of your comfort zone is important for a number of reasons, perhaps most importantly, for personal growth. Not only that, but it helps you to eliminate fear, take the next step and to create the life you want. But how can you actually push yourself and stretch your comfort zone?
If you keep educating yourself and learning new things, you’re more likely to feel ready to take the leap to make changes in your life to create a life you love . Whether that’s learning new skills or researching whatever it is that’s holding you back, developing yourself personally and gaining knowledge and understanding, will help you to feel more confident to step outside of your comfort zone.
Sit down and make a clear plan. What do you want to achieve and what do you need to do to get there? Who can you enrol in your vision to help you along the way? You’d be surprised how many people you’ll find that would be delighted to work toward an inspiring common goal. Keep in mind this plan may change over time. Write down exactly what you need to do and then focus on pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone step by step.
Set yourself small goals. For example, if you want to learn Spanish but you’re afraid you won’t be any good, or you tell yourself that ‘you’re not good at languages’, your first small step could be to sign up to a class or download a language app. Next, you can challenge yourself to learn a new word each day.
By setting yourself goals and breaking it down in this way, you don’t feel like you’re taking on something overwhelming. Instead, you take small manageable (and way less scary) steps towards your overall goal.
Paulo Coelho said:
‘If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it’s lethal’.
Of course, ‘adventure’ can mean a number of things here and means different things to each of us. It doesn’t have to mean rock climbing or sky-diving, it can mean starting a new business venture or enrolling for an online course to learn something new. The important part is that you recognise when you’re bogged down in routine and feeling stuck. If you want to stretch your comfort zone, you need to try new things regularly and break away from your everyday routine.
Finally, remember that it’s OK if things go wrong or don’t go the way you expected. Lessons can often lead to new insights. Remember failure isn’t final unless you retreat back to your comfort zone. It’s a part of the journey to stretch yourself to expand to BE all that you can, and the more you take on new challenges, the more it becomes a way of life that is exciting and deeply fulfilling.
